Topics to Consider Before Investing in an Ultraviolet Air Purifier

A number of studies have been conducted recently that indicates a rise in respiratory illnesses within individuals. These respiratory illnesses were attributed to an increase of pollutants in the air. Furthermore, additional studies indicated a significant decrease in school attendance amongst children. These studies drew a direct correlation between increased pollutants in the air with respiratory illnesses which created a rise in school absenteeism.

Also, there has been comparison studies conducted that measure the pollutants in our environment with the level of pollutants found in the home. In some studies the results indicated that the home environment contained more contaminants than those found beyond the home.

In response to this data, a product that can address the pollutants within the home is an air purifier. These air purifiers are available in many makes and models and function in different capacities and their use of techniques to purify the air.

One such product that purifies the air is the ultraviolet air purifier. Knowing how an ultraviolet air purifier works, its benefits and associated precautions are important topics to be aware of when considering an air purifier to enhance the quality of the air within your home.

How Does a Ultraviolet Air Purifier Work?

An ultraviolet air purifier is an air purifying apparatus that utilizes ultraviolet light to substantially reduce pollutants within the air. A good ultraviolet air purifier utilizes ultraviolet lighting that ranges from a low intensity wavelength to a high intensity wavelength. This range generally runs from 185 nm to 250 nm.  The low end of the ultraviolet range has been proven to reduce the formation of ozone and the high end of the ultraviolet spectrum stimulates the manufacturing of hydroxyl which provides for maximum air cleaning capabilities.

An ultraviolet air purifier demonstrates the process and effects of photochemistry.  Photochemistry is a process in which the molecules of oxygen and water are transformed into ozone, hydroxyl and hydrogen peroxide. This transformation then reacts with the contaminants in the air causing the pollutants to be nullified into risk-free components.

Benefits

The benefits of utilizing an ultraviolet air purifier are the destruction of pollutants in the air.  These pollutants include bacteria, fungi, viruses and mold.  In addition, harmful byproducts from animals and microorganisms are destroyed. A partial list of these elements includes dust mite excrement, human and animal hair, dander from pets, etc.

The removal of these pollutants from the air that is breathed will decrease respiratory ailments and minimize allergic reactions.

Precautions

When considering an ultraviolet air purifier it is important to remember the important function of the ultraviolet air purifier is the emission of the ultraviolet light. Therefore of primary concern is the wattage of the light and exposure time.  It is important to select an ultraviolet air purifier that utilizes a high wattage ultraviolet bulb.

In addition, an ultraviolet air purifier does not utilize a filter feature. Therefore, because of the ultraviolet light destroying the pollutants and not filtering the pollutants out, particular attention needs to be given to the bulb to ensure that the maximum wattage is maintained. Typically, because of continual use, the wattage of the ultraviolet bulb will lose its intensity and will need to be replaced periodically.
